What is the difference between Smooth Operator and Truth Serum?

They solve the same problem two different ways. Smooth Operator is our original ingrown hair serum, a blend of salicylic, glycolic, and lactic acids that exfoliates inside the follicle, and it is the stronger choice for clients who struggle with stubborn ingrowns and razor bumps. Truth Serum is acid free, made with witch hazel and botanicals, unscented, and gentle enough to use several times a day, which makes it the right pick for sensitive or reactive skin, for facial and brow waxing clients, and for anyone who prefers a clean, natural formula. Both are safe to apply right after a service. If you are not sure, start with Truth Serum, and move to Smooth Operator if the ingrowns need more help.

 

Which ingrown hair serum is safe during pregnancy?

Truth Serum. It contains no exfoliating acids, so it is formulated to be safe throughout pregnancy and while nursing, and it is the serum we recommend for expecting clients. Smooth Operator contains salicylic acid and should not be used during pregnancy or nursing, or by anyone with an aspirin allergy. As always, a client with specific concerns should check with her doctor.

Do these work after sugaring, laser, or shaving, or only after waxing?

They work after any hair removal method. An ingrown hair happens when a hair curls back or grows sideways under the skin, and that can follow waxing, sugaring, laser, electrolysis, tweezing, or shaving. Smooth Operator and Truth Serum both target the skin around the follicle rather than the removal method, and Nourishing Oils hydrate and support the skin barrier afterward, so the routine is the same whatever the service.

How soon after a wax should I start using a serum, and how often?

Right away. Both serums are gentle enough to apply immediately after a service, and that first application is the most important one, since the follicle is open and the skin is most prone to trapping hair as it heals. After that, use the serum daily, especially in the first week or two, then follow with a few drops of Nourishing Oil to hydrate and seal. Consistency between appointments is what keeps ingrowns from coming back.

Do I still need to exfoliate if I use a serum?

Gentle exfoliation helps the serum do its job by keeping dead skin from building up over the follicle. The Silicone Cactus Bikini Scrubber is designed for daily use in the shower on the bikini line and body without over scrubbing, and a body scrub two or three times a week does the rest. Avoid exfoliating in the first 24 to 48 hours after a wax, then bring it back into the routine.

What causes ingrown hairs after waxing or shaving?

An ingrown hair forms when a new hair curls back or grows sideways under the skin instead of up through the follicle, usually because dead skin has built up over the opening or the hair was cut at an angle that lets it pierce the skin. Waxing and sugaring remove the hair from the root, so the regrowth is finer, but the follicle is open for a few days and easily blocked. Keeping the follicle clear with a serum and the surface hydrated and gently exfoliated is what prevents them, which is exactly what this routine does.
